Why Tom from MySpace Triumphs Over AI Bots
I have the results of the most important poll I’ve conducted. It reveals a telling and disturbing truth about the detrimental immediate impact of AI…
Despite the barrage of praise and engagement, you did not find the LinkedIn sales funnel bots motivating. Despite the DMs showing interest and *ahem* encouragement, you did not find X’s 0nly fans bots motivating. (Although, more people find the latter encouraging, which, in retrospect, isn’t altogether unexpected. LinkedIn bots are demotivating.)
No, instead you overwhelmingly chose Tom from Myspace.
Our first friend. (This is ancient pre-Facebook days for you young people). Yes, we would prefer to go back to 2005 to receive periodic encouraging messages and announcements from Tom. Tom, the only person I ever included in my “top friends” list on the MySpace platform.
The progress with AI is going to be a rocky journey. Two steps forward, one step back. But some of those steps back can be large and painful. Tidal waves of AI slop will be one of them. Hugely impactful non-AI breakthroughs drowned out by the AI hype will be another.
Despite all the headwinds and disruptions, I wouldn’t trade it back though. Well, maybe a little if we could get Tom back.
